Goal
Continuous overgrazing by both livestock and wild animals coupled by massive deforestation and lack of skills in environmental management has contributed to massive soil erosion and infertility in Samburu District thus resulting to food insecurity. The Circle is changed by lack of water, high school dropout rates, high incidence of HIV/AIDS and human wildlife conflicts.
Due to the above problems, Kijiji Circle has developed an integrated management approach towards the conservation of Environment through establishment of tree nurseries and intensive community awareness creation on the importance of tree planting.
The Circle aims at reducing poverty amongst the community through environmental conservation, by educating and empowering the community/schools to take responsibility for their growth and development through establishment of tree nurseries and tree planting.
Kijiji has achieved tangible results by distributing 10,000 tree seedlings to the community and 2000 to schools for planting.
Kijiji has faced challenges in fulfilling its objectives, which includes; Lack of political support, lack of adequate skills and resources, unwillingness of the community to buy the trees, lack of regular water supply to support the expansion of tree nurseries, lack of seeds and destruction of the seedlings by the wildlife amongst others.
The Circle is in partnership with Epid-Kenya and the Ministry of Environment and natural resources that provide technical and organizational inputs respectively.
