Membership Criteria

Anyone can be a member if they 1) communicate to Nancy Artz their commitment to the items listed below, and 2) are subscribed to PSISCI’s listserv, “sustain at http://mailman.usm.maine.edu, which is maintained by Nancy Artz. A majority of members can vote to revoke membership if a member fails to meet the commitments listed below or acts inappropriately (e.g., incivility, violation of listserv norms, or impedes the work of the group). Nancy Artz will be responsible for maintaining a list of members.

Other individuals who subscribe to PSISCI’s listserv may participate in PSCISCI work, but they are not official PSISCI members, because they have not made a commitment to the items listed below (e.g., agree to participate in NEW Earth’s peer review process).

Goal

Action Plan (June 2005 – May 2006): 1) PSISCI will investigate initiatives at other campuses that involve students in the assessment and creation of a sustainable campus. Selected summaries will be posted at www.usm.maine.edu/~artz. 2) PSISCI will work with existing USM entities and initiatives to encourage widespread student involvement in the assessment and creation of a sustainable campus. These entities include a. General Education Committee Planning Group, which is charged with developing a general education curriculum model b. Group exploring the creation of a USM entity focusing on sustainable communities

Ideally, our efforts would result in a curricular and/or co-curricular mechanism that would involve students in the assessment and creation of a sustainable campus (i.e., a system that is sustainable in terms of social equity and environmental impact). 3) At the end of the year, if not before, members will assess success of action item #2. If successful, the group will disband or reinvent itself as a resource for another sustainable campus initiative. If unsuccessful, members will decide whether or not to create our own sustainable campus initiative.

If available, New Earth funds will be used to hire students (or returned to New Earth).

Meeting Information

Meetings, which will be announced on the PSISCI listserv and held on a USM campus, can be organized by any PSISCI member. Nancy Artz will call a meeting for New Earth Peer Review.
